Protests begin over Abbott's drug policies in Thailand
From Abbott's Greed
NORTH CHICAGO, Ill. AIDS activists began two days of protests against Abbott Laboratories today
The protests follow the suburban Chicago drug company's decision to withhold drug applications in Thailand after its government threatened to void Abbott patents.Protesters are planning a 'die-in' in downtown Chicago tomorrow as part of a campaign to criticize the company.Thailand has said it was scrapping some patents so it could buy cheaper generics. In response, Abbott pulled its drug applications from the country's regulators. It has since offered to cut some prices and resubmit an application for an H-I-V drug if Thailand's government keeps patents intact. An Abbott spokeswoman says it's offering a low price for the medicine, but is still trying to protect its intellectual property rights.
